The Expedition

One day in 2006, three students of Development Studies at the University of Oslo were sitting in the cafeteria chatting along. Andreas had just returned from a half-year stay in Zimbabwe, while Øyvind and Jørn had finished their military service. Their studies were interesting, but that day they agreed on that it wouldn’t be too bad to ride their bicycles from the North Cape, Norway to Cape Agulhas, South Africa either. August 2009 was decided as the time to begin the journey, and almost three years later they are getting ready.

Our goals for the expedition:

- We believe the expedition will be a great personal experience. It is over 20,000 kilometers long, goes through approx. 20 countries, and a variety of different places and cultures. We hope to experience lots of happy times, and there will probably be some not so happy as well. All of this will be posted on this website for your enjoyment.

- The more serious part of the expedition is the environmental and development aspect of it. We think that something is terribly wrong when the world still is divided into extreme poor and rich. That our entire planet is close to disaster doesn’t make things better. We therefore hope that we through our expedition can display some of these problems, what can be done about them, and show what some are already doing to inspire more people to get involved.

- No expedition is complete without its good cause. We plan to collect 500 000 NOK for the UNICEF project Schools for Africa.

We are planning to start the expedition at the North Cape on the 25th of August 2009. The expedition will probably take 1-1,5 years to complete.
